Reports to: School Health Specialist FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Accountability Objectives:
Provides health services to strengthen and facilitate the educational process by modifying or removing health-related barriers to learning in the individual students.
Essential Duties:
- Maintains, evaluates and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate the individual needs of students
- Consults and support school staff, parents, and students on student health issues
- Provides support in establishing system-wide health procedures and policies in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations under the supervision of the School Health Specialist
- Provides training and professional development regarding health-related issues for school staff members as needed
- Participates in the IEP plan development and needed
- Administers medication to students
- Assists the School Health Specialist with kindergarten registration, training, health fairs, student health screenings and other health-related events as needed
- Assists the School Health Specialist in providing appropriate staff training in universal precautions, medical conditions and delegated medical procedures for specific students
- Maintains records and reports for all students who have health-related conditions and provides assistance to students and/or parents as needed
- Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases
- Maintains a daily clinic log of student visits
- Ensures the use of proper forms, permission slips, and schedules for dispensing medication
- Assists the School Health Specialist in the annual review of immunization records
- Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance
- Performs other duties as assigned by appropriate administrator
Minimum Qualifications:
- Licensed Practical Nurse or Registerd Nurse
- Minimum of one year of experience in public health nursing, hospital, and/or related medical facility required. Experience in a school setting is preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the principles and practices underlying professional nursing
- Knowledge of the principles and practices underlying the special field of school health
- Knowledge of current trends in nursing and of literature in the fields of school health
- Knowledge of organization and administration of other cooperating agencies
- Knowledge of state and local laws relating to health and social issues
- Ability to participate cooperatively in a program of school health nursing
- Ability to exercise professional judgment in making decisions
- Ability to communicate appropriately, collaboratively, and effectively with students, parents, administrators, other school personnel, health care providers, and community agencies
- Ability to demonstrate a genuine interest in the student population and its health needs.
- Ability to organize a health office and manage time
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office suite, including Word and Excel
- Thorough knowledge of the ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by professional organizations and/or federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations
