Position Summary:

The Fleet Supervisor is responsible for the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of the district's school bus fleet. Reporting directly to the Pupil Transportation Director, this role is integral to ensuring reliable, high-quality transportation services in support of district objectives.


Essential Duties

  • Oversee the safe operation and maintenance of the district’s fleet, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Monitor and enforce regulations related to fleet operation, repair, preventive maintenance, and other special conditions of the transportation department.
  • Develop and maintain safe shop practices; regularly inspect tools and equipment to ensure proper usage.
  • Plan and manage annual Department of Public Safety school bus inspections.
  • Ensure thorough pre- and post-delivery inspections of all new vehicles.
  • Develop specifications for fleet assets and manage replacement intervals through the bid process.
  • Ensure shop personnel receive necessary training, including maintaining ASE certification.
  • Prioritize scheduled and unscheduled repairs to maximize time and resource efficiency.
  • Provide oversight to fleet technicians, including scheduling, performance feedback, coaching, and inspecting work.
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations for fleet technicians, recommending corrective actions as necessary.
  • Participate in recruiting fleet technicians and familiarize new hires with shop methods, procedures, and safety programs.
  • Oversee parts inventory, maintain appropriate stock levels, and conduct periodic audits of frequently used parts.
  • Manage the fleet management system, including data entry, report generation, and system integrity.
  • Respond to and/or dispatch personnel to emergencies during and after work hours as required.
  • Analyze productivity and operational reports to identify areas for improvement in fleet performance.
  • Maintain accurate equipment records in accordance with all regulations and policies.
  • Stay informed about trends and technical advancements within the fleet management industry.
  • Maintain daily out-of-service and spare bus lists, providing updates to the Director.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum QualificationsAll candidates selected to fill a vacant position in this classification must submit to, and pass a drug and alcohol screening, after meeting the following minimum requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, and specialized training in the repair and maintenance of both gasoline and diesel vehicles
  • ASE certification is highly preferred.
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a P & S endorsement and an acceptable MVR record.
  • Minimum of five years of supervisory experience in servicing and repairing heavy-duty vehicles in a commercial or municipal setting.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of safety regulations, transportation business practices, and fleet management principles.
  • Strong supervisory skills with the ability to lead and motivate a team.
  • In-depth understanding of local, state, and federal laws and regulations related to vehicle maintenance and inspections.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Ability to work independently and in team settings to meet goals and deadlines.
  • Customer-focused with a results-driven approach.
  • Professional demeanor with the ability to exercise tact and diplomacy.
